Our History The legacy of Arthur Weeks & Son Jewelers distinguishes our business today. It began with Arthur Weeks and his partner, Gustave Holmberg, establishing themselves as “Watchmakers and Jewelers” in 1896. They soon found a place at the corner of South and Division streets that was just right for their new business. Arthur became known for his skills as a craftsman, creating gold crosses and emblems by hand. He became the sole owner in 1910, and continued as proprietor until his death in 1930.
Arthur’s son, Arthur, took over the business at the young age of 21 and managed it for the next 50 years. Times were not always prosperous though, and during the Great Depression it was necessary to rent out the building and move temporarily to another location on Main Street. His tenacity and resolve kept the business from declaring bankruptcy during these difficult times, and he was able to move back to South & Division in 1950.
In 1953, Arthur’s son, Arthur (known to all as Doug) joined the family business, after graduating from watch-making school at SUNY Morrisville. Doug met his future wife Nancy, when she came to work at the store as a sales associate in 1954. They were married in 1955. In 1966, the store was remodeled, and expanded into what is now its current space. Nancy continued to work alongside Doug until her retirement in 2002.
The founding Arthur Weeks would be proud to know that his great-grandson, John, continues his legacy. John joined the business full time after graduating from Western New England College with a B.S. in Finance in 1983. John manages the business today, and has focused on expanding it with many new and exciting products, while upholding the quality and service that customers have come to expect.
