When a business survives and thrives for more than a century, it creates a legacy and a history all its own.
Arthur Weeks and Sons Jewelers began with Arthur Weeks and his partner, Gustave Holmberg, establishing themselves as “Watchmakers and Jewelers” in 1896. They soon set up shop at the corner of South and Division streets that was just right for their new business in the middle of a bustling small village called Peekskill, NY. Except for a brief period during the Great Depression, Arthur Weeks Jewelers has anchored this corner for more than a century.
Arthur became known for his skills as a craftsman, creating many beautiful designs for his growing and loyal clientele. He became the sole owner in 1910, and continued as proprietor until his death in 1930.
Arthur’s son, also named Arthur, took over the family business at the young age of 21 and managed it for the next 50 years.
In 1953, Arthur’s son, known to all in the Hudson Valley area as Doug, joined the family business, after graduating from watch-making school at SUNY Morrisville. Doug met his future wife Nancy when she came to work at the store as a sales associate in 1954. They were married in 1955 and continued to work side-by-side until their retirements in 2002 and 2005 respectively.
In 1966, Arthur and Doug realized their growing business would require more space to meet the needs of their clientele and purchased the building next door, remodeled, and expanded into what is now its current space.
Founder Arthur Weeks would be proud to know that his great-grandson, John, continues his legacy today. John began work in the family business after graduation from Western New England University in 1983 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration.
The American Gem Society was founded in 1934 by a small group of leading jewelers including the great grandfather of modern gemology, Robert M. Shipley. Their goal was to create an organization that could help protect the jewelry-buying public from fraud and false advertising.
Today, Shipley’s vision has become a reality, the American Gem Society is the country's preeminent jewelry trade organization dedicated to consumer protection. .Arthur Weeks and Son Jewelers is proud to be one of nearly 3,500 jewelers, retailers, suppliers, individual titleholders and affiliates that have joined the American Gem Society (AGS) and have dedicated themselves to: consumer protection, ethical business practices and development and maintenance of superior gemological skills and knowledge
To join AGS, every member must go through a -peer-reviewed application process followed by a recertification exam every single year. This process ensures that every AGS-certified jeweler you meet is at the top of their game, and more importantly, each one has pledged to protect you, the consumer.
